Coonamble Library Plays Their Part

The National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (#NAPCAN) reminds us that protecting children is everyone’s business. During National Child Protection Week, which runs from Fathers’ Day Sunday 3 September to 9 September, the presentation of NAPCAN’s #PlayYourPart Awards is held. The Awards honour individuals, communities and organisations who are working to create and promote child safety and healthier and happier envi...ronments for children’s well-being across the country - from rural communities to inner cities, from suburbs to the outback. Only two are chosen per state and thanks to the nomination of former Director of Community Services Lianne Davids, Coonamble Library was one of the recipients this year. The Library and those of the Community Development staff working in it was recognised as a “community living space” and that through its equipment and programmes, it encourages children’s well-being and growth. This is enhanced with after school activities and a full programme of events and activities during the school holiday periods. According to NAPCAN, proven strategies for preventing child abuse and neglect that the Library embrace includes: building strong communities where everyone understands their role in protecting children; valuing children and advocating for their rights, and for their voices to be heard and creating organisations that are child safe and child-friendly. The awards were hosted by the Inner West Council and presented by Ms Shanti Ramen, NAPCAN Board Director and Mr Andrew Johnson, NSW Advocate for Children and Young People at the Hannaford Community Centre in Rozelle. The award was accepted by Coonamble Shire Council Librarian, Raquel Pickering. “It was a fantastic evening,” said Raquel. “Being in such a lovely venue, listening to a great young performer singing, learning about the other winners and their programme as well as meeting the NAPCAN staff who did a great job on the night and who do a great job year round, caring about, and promoting, such an important issue.” Congratulations to the Community Development team and well done to all who participate in making the Library a child safe and welcoming environment.
